Fadia Haddad

(1959)

Fadia Haddad was born in the Lebanon in 1959. She lives and works in Paris.

Graduating from the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts in Beirut in 1984, Fadia Haddad continued her studies of the arts at ‘L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts’ in Paris until 1988. Residing in Paris ever since, her work is remarked upon from her beginnings at the ‘Salon de la Jeune Peinture’ (Showcase of young painters), and then at exhibitions in Montrouge.

From 1989 onwards, she regularly participates at Contemporary Art Fairs such as ‘Art Paris’, ‘Art Brussels’, ‘Art Miami’, ‘Art Dubai’ and the ‘FIAC’ in Paris; and in exhibitions organised within prestigious locations such as the ‘Fondation Paul Ricard’ or at the ‘l’Institut du Monde Arabe’ also in Paris. Her work is equally found in a number of private and public collections : ‘Barjeel Art Foundation’ – UAE; ‘Patrimoine de l’Humanite’ in Geneva; ‘Artistic Memories of the 20th Century’ in New York; ‘Sursock Museum’ in Beirut, as well as ‘l’Institut du Monde Arabe’ (IMA); and the ‘CNAP’, both in Paris.

In 2011, Harry Bellet consecrates a monograph to her work in a publication from Area Descartes and Company, – ‘Traversée’. Her series of ‘Masks’ produced over a twenty year period. Her work dances as much to the rythmn of the masked as it does to the breath of the artist. One notices an offsetting of the ‘mask’ in relation to the canvas which instills all its musicality. At another moment, it is the mask which dominates, surging forth from a slowly worked background.

Whether Fadia Haddad paints ‘birds’, ‘landscapes’ or ‘masks’, her work for ever exudes a truth profoundly observed and reconceived about life. Her painting reflects in equal measures both the emptyness and the fullness of our time. It is through the symbolic reach of her work ; the vigor of her gests ; the breath profoundly inspired, the raw or worked colour ; that our stories unveil and surpass our dreams.
