Oh Se-Yeol\u2019s uniqueness has made him\none of the leading artists in the Korean art scene. His pictures address the\nunconscious and the scattered memories we retain from our childhood. His style,\nwhose na\u00efve lines are reminiscent of children\u2019s drawings, take the viewer into\nan incomparable poetic universe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He uses a simple pictorial language,\nin which each symbol is open to interpretation. The small enigmatic objects\nthat attract the eye invite the viewers to delve into their long-lost memories.\nOh Se-Yeol encourages us to reconnect with our inner child to find the lost\ninnocence that is so important for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In many of his pictures he paints a\nbackground with no perspective, applying different layers. Then he incises the\nsurface, revealing numbers between 1 and 10, which continue infinitely. Here\nand there, he adds small images or incongruous objects, with great poetic\nsimplicity. These figures, stripped of any meaning, are the result of the artist\u2019s\nautomatic and unconscious gestures. Most of Oh Se-Yeol\u2019s work consists of\na quest for a spontaneous creative essence, freed from the aesthetic canons\nthat he sees as dogmatic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is particularly interested in\nworking matter: he likes to scratch, press, scrape, or polish the successive\nlayers of paint applied to the canvas. Although he is very attached to Korean\nart and culture, he does not follow the country\u2019s aesthetic codes, but has\ninvented his own unique style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The artist, who lived through the Korean War (1950\u20131953), has contributed to the country\u2019s incredible reconstruction based on the Western model, as well as its economic expansion. Oh Se-Yeol criticises today\u2019s world and its rampant materialism. The isolated figures in his works are symbols of his vision of man in perdition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
