Guillaume Lebelle

Guillaume Lebelle was born in 1972 in Paris. He was discovered after graduating from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1998 by Jean Fournier, with whom he had several solo and group exhibitions alongside Joan Mitchell, James Bishop and Sam Francis. Guillaume then exhibited at Christophe Gaillard’s gallery until 2014 and collaborated regularly with the Hus gallery.

He composes his works with disparate elements, creating a composite universe where the lyrical gesture on the canvas rubs shoulders with more graphic forms often drawn on paper. The space for circulation between the forms is provided by the white backgrounds which reinforce the dialogue among line and colour. From this breathing between the different elements emerges a perfect harmony.

His sensitive line, which suggests but never imposes, plays with the boundaries of writing, legibility and sketching. The vibrations of his intuitive gesture, both sure and fragile, speak to us of the ephemeral and the intangible, just as the materials used – raw canvas, torn and crumpled paper or recycled elements – evoke a dislocated and unfinished world.

In his paintings, no hierarchy between colors or forms appears at first glance. Our eye travels across the canvas without finding a precise inking point; it is in contemplation that the work reveals itself.

” When I paint, everything happens involuntarily and without hierarchy. The painting is like a mixing table where everything that has seized me is reorganized and finds its definition, its adequate depth. ” GL

For Guillaume Lebelle, painting is the place, the opportunity, (the chance) to find this space which is ours: the opening of the very far and the very close reunited.
