Nam Kwan (1911-1990)

Nam Kuan

Born in Kyungbuk, South Korea in 1911, he studied in the Tokyo University of the Arts in the 30s. Fascinated by the artists such as Soulages, Manessier, Poliakoff and Picasso, he decided to leave for Paris in 1954 where he enrolled into l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Starting from 1958, he took part in Salon de Mai. Ever since the 50s, he was influenced by lyrical abstraction and became one of the pioneers of Korean abstract art while remained faithful to his cultural and artistic roots. His dreamy and timeless universe, at the boundary between the East and the West, is composed of symbols, hierarchy and writings.
