Chu Teh-Chun

(1920-2014)

Chu Teh-Chun (朱德群) was born in 1920 in Baitou Zen in the province of Jiangsu. Born into an educated family, he studied calligraphy from an early age. He was accepted into the National School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in 1935, where he followed the teachings of Western art masters such as Lin Fengmian and Wu Dayu. During this period, he trained in oil painting and discovered Impressionism. In 1948, after years of exile related to Sino-Japanese war, Chu Teh Chun relocated to Taipei where he taught art at the National University. Opening up new avenues, his influence would be crucial to his young students looking for something new. He set sail for Europe in the mid-50s and settled in Paris. He found a new approach in the Parisian abstract painting movement which allowed him to retain nature as his primary source of inspiration. With neither disconnection nor duality, he delivers the right balance between the languages of the East and the West. His work is displayed in numerous exhibitions in museums worldwide.
